Alex Mathews
Bass-baritone - Torin Chiles Studio
Alex Mathews is currently in the fourth year of his Bachelor of Music with Honors in Vocal Performance, and studies with Torin Chiles. Alex performed with the Canadian Children’s Opera Company from the age of 6 to 18 in performance venues around Toronto. As a boy soprano, he has performed solo and chorus roles in the Canadian Opera Company’s productions of Tosca, A Midsummer’s Night Dream, and Carmen. He has also performed solo and chorus roles with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, including the role of Second Spirit in their semi-staged production of Die Zauberflöte. Alex attended high school at St. Michael’s Choir School in Toronto, where he performed at annual Massey Hall concerts, as well as on their annual tours in Canada, the United States, and Italy at the Vatican for Pope Benedict XVI. He has performed in the chorus of Western University Opera Workshop’s performances of La Cenerentola, La Bohème, and Falstaff. This past season, he performed the roles of Simone in Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi and Sarastro in Mozart’s Die Zauberflöte. During the summer of 2017, he performed the role of Leporello in Mozart’s Don Giovanni at the Accademia Europea Dell'Opera (AEDO), in Lucca, Italy. This year, Alex is thrilled to be performing the role of Dancaire in Bizet’s Carmen.
